Guthrie High School has found their next girls basketball head coach and they simply went across the gymnasium to find their man.
Pete Papahronis is making the switch from the BlueJay basketball team to the Lady Jays team. The announcement came Friday morning.
A search for a boys basketball coach will begin immediately. The change is upon approval from the Guthrie Board of Education.
Papahronis, who was the 2012 Suburban Conference Coach of the Year, just finished his 9th season as the boy’s head coach with a 17-11 record and a trip to the state tournament.
The coach took five of his nine teams, at Guthrie, to the big dance where he had a 7-3 state tournament record and two 5A state titles in 2008 and 2009.
“Papahronis has done an outstanding job in directing the boys program and feels certain he will continue that run of excellence as he takes over the reins for the Lady Bluejays,” Terry Simpson said in a release.
Papahronis took the boy’s position in 2004 as his first head coaching position after serving as an assistant coach for former head coach Charles Crooks.
The girls position became open when Terry Carris announced he was not going to continue his coaching duties in March. Carris had two winning seasons in his five years during his second stint at Guthrie.
