The Piedmont Wildcats will enter Jelsma Stadium looking to end a losing streak that extends out to seven games over two seasons. On the other side, the Guthrie BlueJays will look to add to a 18 game winning streak extending from last season.
The BlueJays not only riding their current win streak, but have also won their last 30 home games inside the Rock. The last home loss came back in week seven of the 2009 season.
The Wildcats enter the game at 0-4 with losses to Skiatook, Weatherford, Noble and Deer Creek. In the loss to Deer Creek, Piedmont held a 6-0 lead at halftime only to see the Antlers to score on five consecutive possessions for a 31-13 rivalry win.
Piedmont last tasted victory on Oct. 18 with a win over Clinton. Now, the Wildcats are playing in Class 5A for the first time in school history and the schedule makers did not welcome them so kindly.
After Friday night’s game with the Jays, the Wildcats will host Carl Albert next week and last week dropped their district opener to Deer Creek. All three opponents are expected to finish in the top three of the toughest district in 5A. A tall challenge for any team in 5A.
The Wildcats did receive some good news last week when starting quarterback Lucas Richert returned to the line-up for the first time this season after sitting out the first three weeks with an injury.
Richert likes to throw the deep ball and will test the Jays secondary.
The offense is averaging just over 10 points a game, but are allowing 29 points per game. Guthrie will enter with a scoring average of 32 and allowing just 8-points.
Jays undefeated in the series
This will be the fifth meeting between the schools, but the first district game.
The programs played in the non-district in the 2006-09 seasons. In their last meeting, Piedmont jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but the Jays went on to score 34 unanswered points.
Game broadcast
Guthrie and Piedmont can be heard on the radio home of GHS athletics Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM in North Central Oklahoma, or world-wide at Guthrie News Page or Guthrie Sports Page. Chris Evans, Casey Porter, Phil Nichols and Craig Fleck will have the call of the game.
