The Guthrie city council recently approved two grants for the Guthrie Police Department (GPD) that will allow them to add additional safety to the local school district and to the streets.
The department was first awarded a $12,000 grant from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. This reimbursement grant will allow the police department to work traffic-specific overtime with the goal of reducing injury collisions in Guthrie.
GPD reports they worked to 231 traffic related accidents, including three fatalities from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. During this time period their department issued 665 warnings/citations for speed related charges.
“The vast majority of accidents in our city limits could have been prevented by a reduction in speed,” a spokesperson said for the department.
State Highways 77, 33 and Interstate 35 all run through the incorporated areas of the City of Guthrie, keeping the volume of motoring public at a high level day and night. A GPD traffic division was created in October 2015 consisting of two officers, one day shift and one night shift, to increase visibility of police and citations/warnings for speed related violations.
GPD also accepted a $125,000 grant over three years from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services by the United States Department of Justice.
This grant will allow the police department to add one School Resource Officer to their staff.
