Three people were transported to the hospital, including a five-year-old boy, on Wednesday afternoon after a horrific semi-truck and pickup truck accident on Highway 105. The accident was confirmed to be alcohol related.

Wreck 05152013Just after 3 p.m., emergency crews were sent to Highway 105 just in front of the Guthrie Golf and Country Club. Upon arrival a black 2008 Dodge Ram truck was buried near the semi’s trailer with a father and son pinned inside.

The highway was blocked for over two hours.

The Guthrie Fire Department extracted the boy by cutting the doors to retrieve him. The driver of the Dodge, John Withers 35 of Guthrie, pulled himself out of the truck despite having significant trauma to his leg, head and chest.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s report, Withers was under the influence of alcohol and was driving while impaired.

A witness, another semi-truck driver, saw Wither’s truck traveling east bound when it suddenly veer into west bound traffic where the semi-truck was traveling.

The boy, who was properly secured in a child booster seat, was alert and crying while the fire department attempted to get him out of the truck. Officials believe the child did not suffer any injuries, but treated him as if he did and quickly transported him to the emergency room for a complete evaluation. The boy was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City and listed in stable condition.

The shaken semi-truck driver, Curtis Strickland 52 of Covington, was taken to St. Anthony’s hospital in Oklahoma City with chest and wrist injuries where he was treated and released.

Withers was transferred to OU Medical Center and was listed in critical condition.

  1. Well, you know that dad is going to have to live the rest of his life knowing what happened and what could have happened. At least he wasn’t too drunk to secure a child in a booster seat well enough that he wasn’t hurt more severely, I have a hard time securing a car/booster seat to my liking sober! I hope that little boy recovers fully physically and mentally.
