Every year on April 22, over a billion people in 190 countries take action for Earth Day. That’s exactly what Rhonda Gillett and Jay Benson’s pre-k students did Tuesday morning with the planting of a tree.
The boys and girls gathered outside of Willow Creek and took turns digging a hole to plant the tree and then covering up the roots with the perfect size hand shovels.
The five-year-old students were decked out in their orange aprons with frog logo displayed on the front.
Ms. Jamie bought the children a book called “One Tree” and as an added bonus read it to the now interested students. Her mother, Ms. Marilyn, made a “famous” dirt cake with gummy worms for a snack that certainly earned the kids attention.
The pre-k class and employees at Willow Creek are hoping to make this an annual tradition.
Earth Day 2014 focuses on the unique environmental challenges of our time. As the world’s population migrates to cities, and as the bleak reality of climate change becomes increasingly clear, the need to create sustainable communities is more important than ever.
