Quick fire response saves homes as crews urge caution with burn piles

Firefighters from multiple departments were able to quickly contain a grass fire in Logan County thanks to crews being fully staffed and ready to respond amid high fire danger conditions.

According to the Woodcrest Fire Department, the fast response was made possible by having personnel already staged at the station. With high winds, dry vegetation, and elevated fire danger, Woodcrest firefighters front-loaded staffing with seven personnel prepared to respond at a moment’s notice.

Initial information indicates the fire originated from a burn pile that had been used the day before. Gusty winds and dry conditions allowed the fire to spread rapidly before crews arrived on scene.

Firefighters successfully protected two residential homes and two outbuildings from damage. One small well and pump house was lost in the fire.

No injuries were reported at the time.

Woodcrest Fire officials credited the successful outcome to the coordinated response and assistance from neighboring departments. Oak Cliff Fire, Sooner Fire, and Guthrie Fire all responded to help contain the fire. Edmond Fire was also dispatched but was canceled before arriving on the scene.

In a related message, the Logan County Emergency Management Office is urging residents to double-check any recent burn piles to ensure they are completely extinguished. Officials warn that with ongoing windy, dry conditions and low humidity, even a single ember can escape and ignite a wildfire.

Fire departments across the county have already responded to several grass fires caused by burn piles that were not fully put out.

Residents are encouraged to use extreme caution and avoid burning when possible during periods of high fire danger.
