The Harding Lady Bison’s cross country team placed three runners, including Guthrie’s Rachel Roberts, in the top eigh to claim the Great American Conference championship.
Roberts helped her school to their 20th conference championship in program history with a race time 18:59.1 to claim eighth place overall in the 5k race to earn First Team All-GAC honors.
The Exercise Science major improved in each conference championship she ran. In 2011, Roberts ran a 19:06 and in 2012 a 20:23 to earn All-GAC Women’s Cross Country Second Team.
Roberts, a 2010 Guthrie alum, was named to The Oklahoman and Jim Thorpe Association’s Scholar Athlete’s of 2010. She was a State champion in the 1,600 meters her freshmen year at Guthrie High School. Roberts placed in the top five at state five other times in 1,600 and 3,200. First-team Big All-City as a freshman, honorable mention twice. Four-time state qualifier in cross country. First-team All-City as a sophomore, honorable mention twice.
Roberts, the daughter of Merritt and Denise Roberts of Guthrie, piled up a grade point average of 4.0 and scored a 27 on her ACT. Her high school academics resulted in being selected to the National Honor Society. In addition she was the Senior class president, a National Art Honor Society, and earned the Masonic Academic Excellence Award.
