The Guthrie Board of Education unanimously voted Monday evening to add two School Resource Officers and announced the hiring of a Junior High and Upper Elementary assistant principal.

Police at GHSAn annual contract was agreed upon between the school system and the City of Guthrie to add two School Resource Officers (SRO’s). The SRO’s, who have not been named at this time, will be in addition to current SRO Anthony Gibbs.

The school district will fund the two new positions at a total cost of $63,854.50 which includes salary, uniform, training, insurance, pension, equipment and fuel. The City of Guthrie will continue to cover the cost of Officer Gibbs.

Each SRO is expected to overlook two schools each and among their duties will be to be an extension of the principal’s office and a resource for students, teachers and parents.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said the agreement was more than “fair” compared to some of the districts he was previously at.

Rainwater and Watson named Assistant Principals

Robbie Rainwater and Dani Watson were promoted within the district to assistant principals.

Rainwater, who previously served as an eighth grade history and science teacher, will now take over as the Junior High assistant. Rainwater, who will begin his ninth year in the district, replaces Terry Carris who retired this past school year.

Watson, who was an instructional coach at Fogarty Elementary for six years, will now move to Guthrie Upper Elementary. Watson will take over the position from Dale Munyon. The upcoming school year will be her 11th with the district.

District in need of certified teachers

It’s not just a Guthrie school district issue but a state-wide issue as well, but the local school district is in need of finding 13 certified teachers for the upcoming school year.

In his superintendent’s report, Simpson said the school currently does not have any recommendations for the open positions in the district.

Simpson went on to say funding and salary are the top reasons for people not getting into education, or leaving the state. He further explained that everyone needs to help recruit more people get into education.

Some of the best teachers I worked along side in the Jefferson County School district in Lakewood, Colorado were OSU and OU graduates, they moved out of Oklahoma because of the pathetic salaries here for teachers.
