The case between the State of Oklahoma versus Stacey Brewer began Wednesday morning inside the Logan County Courthouse.
Brewer, a high school coach and teacher in the Coyle school district, is being charged with 13 felony counts including indecent exposure and lewd acts with a child under 16. Three female victims have come forward with allegations and are expected to testify.
In the state’s 14 minute opening argument, the assistant district attorney described the situation as The Fox and the Hen, in reference to a high school teacher (coach) taking advantage of a student. However, the defense asked the jurors, who is the victim here? The defense claims Brewer is the victim due to the accusations brought up against him.
The state called six witnesses to the stand on day one, including the first alleged victim, who was on the stand for 125 minutes.
She testified that Brewer asked her to stay on the bus after everyone had gotten off to exchange phone numbers. After the students left the bus for the school building, the alleged victim said Brewer had an erect penis outside of his penis. She recalled seeing it twice and ran off the bus, although video footage, shown to jurors, appears to show her walking away.
It is believed to be common practice for bus drivers in the district to exchange numbers with students so they know if they need to pick up students.
The alleged victim, now 20-years-old and enrolled in a Oklahoma college, seemed to be confused at times during her cross-examination as she had troubled remembering what she had given in her written statement as well as her forensic and preliminary interviews. Throughout her cross-examination she repeated several times “I don’t remember”.
Among those others taking the stand was the lead agent from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations, the victims friend who she first shared her story with, the victims at the time boyfriend, the boyfriend’s father and the police officer who responded to the school and investigated the matter all testified.
Day two of the trial is set for Thursday morning where it is set to recess at noon until Monday morning. The trial is expected to take up to two weeks.
