Sixth inning rally sparks Guthrie’s run-rule win over Piedmont

A 10-run explosion in the sixth inning hoisted Guthrie to their sixth straight victory with a 14-3 run-rule win in Piedmont on Monday.

Guthrie jumped out to a 4-0 lead after before breaking the game wide open in the sixth. In that inning, the Jays brought 14 hitters to plate with the first hitter, senior Zane Maltz, blasting a pitch over the right-centerfield fence for his first homerun of the season.

With the win, the Bluejays are now 8-1 overall and 3-0 in district play. Piedmont falls to 5-4 and 2-1.

The two teams will meet again on Tuesday inside Squires Field with a first pitch at 5 p.m. A ceremony thanking those for their sponsorship of the fence in front of the ballpark. Also, Deanna Davenport’s kindergarten class will sing the national anthem.

Dalton Graybeal singled home the first run of the game and clearing the bases was Camden Wilcott’s with a three-RBI stand up triple.

In the magical sixth, Jays picked up six of their 12 hits in the game. With Maltz’s blast, Braden Davenport and Tyler Kisner each supplied RBI doubles. Piedmont did not help themselves with four walks and two errors.

Kisner finished the day 3-3 at the plate while Davenport put in a 3-4 day and Kowlaski finished 2-4, two RBIs and extends his team best six game hit streak.

Piedmont had chances in both the first and third innings, but left the bases loaded in each frame.

Kowalski (3-0) picked up his third win in four tries by pitching five and a third innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out six.
