Softball drops state tournament game to Pryor

Guthrie and Pryor shake hands after the first round state tournament game.

The Guthrie Lady Jays made a strong showing in the Class 5A state softball tournament Thursday in Oklahoma City, but their season ended in the first round with an 18-8 loss to top-seeded Pryor.

The Lady Jays finished the season 16-14, marking their fifth consecutive trip to the state tournament.

“Thank you to all the fans who supported us today,” head coach Kara Tarrant said. “I’m so proud of how the girls fought this season. It was a rough road this season, but we are better for those tough times. We will continue to grow as a program.”

Guthrie got off to a fast start, scoring two runs in the first inning. Junior Ryn McCormick stole home, and fellow junior Savannah Ingle followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in another run. Pryor quickly answered, scoring three in the bottom half to take a 3-2 lead.

The Lady Jays responded in the second inning as Brylan Shephard homered to left field, scoring two runs and giving Guthrie a 4-3 advantage. Guthrie added two more runs in the third inning, including an RBI double from Ingle, to extend the lead.

Ingle kept the offense going with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth, putting Guthrie ahead 8-6.

However, Pryor surged back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring nine runs on eight hits, including a three-run homer from Mckenna Yancey, to take a 15-8 lead. Pryor cruised to an 18-8 win in a six-inning run-rule contest.

Guthrie was led at the plate by Ingle, who drove in four runs on two hits, and freshman Teagan Duehning, who went 3-for-4.

Holland McLemore, who fought through injury to return to the circle, took the loss for Guthrie, giving up 14 runs (nine earned) on 16 hits over three and two-thirds innings. Coda Taylor earned the win for Pryor, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits over six innings.

Pryor out-hit Guthrie 20-8, with multiple players contributing, including Rhymee Rutherford, who had five RBIs on four hits, and Tayla Vance, who went 5-for-5.
