Softball falls in championship game, 2-1

The Lady Jays softball program dominated their way to the championship game of the El Reno tournament last week by shutting out three opponents before falling in the finals.

In their first game of the tournament, Guthrie received a dominating pitching performance from senior Bailey Shaffer as she help aid her team to a 14-0 win over Northwest Classen.

Leading the way offensively was Madison Dutton and Trista Legrande by going 2-3. Shaffer and Hannah Dean added 1-2 performances.

In game two, Guthrie took down Class 6A Enid, 3-0. Dean collected her second win on the young season while going a perfect 2-2 at the plate.

Shaffer and Dutton were 2-3 each and LeGrande finished 1-3 with two RBI’s.

On the following day, Guthrie jumped out to an early lead en route to a 7-0 win over Jones. The win was the sixth straight win following a season opening loss to Blackwell.

Again, Dean (3-0) was the winning pitcher and was 2-2 at the plate. LeGrande was 2-3.

In the finals against Duncan, the game was called after four and a half innings after playing a 65-minute time-limit game.

The Lady Demons remained perfect on the season (8-0) while snapping Guthrie’s six-game winning streak.

Shaffer suffered the loss in the circle. Dean and Dutton finished 1-2 offensively, Dutton brought in the lone Lady Jay run for the RBI.

Guthrie is now 6-2 overall and will play Deer Creek and Carl Albert this week.
