Manager Brian Billings and his Sonic franchise, located at I-35 and Highway 33, gave their most recent generous donation to Guthrie Public Schools and particularly Fogarty Elementary.

Billings donated $7,000 to the school and in return the school plans to purchase smart boards for the classrooms.

A smart board combines a whiteboard with the power of a computer and the interactive whiteboard allows teachers to deliver lessons, write notes in digital ink and save work – all with the simple touch of a finger.

Billings has been making donations to the schools since 2007 and have equalled $50,000. Each year in the past Sonic has donated $1,000 to each of the school’s principal, however this year Billings wanted to do something a little different.

Instead of spreading the donations out, Billings is aiming towards picking two schools, through a random drawing, a year and make a big donation until “everyone gets a little bit piece of the pie.”

“A bunch of little prizes are nice, but one big prize is great. They (schools) all need so much,” Billings said.

Along with Guthrie Public Schools, Sonic made a donation to St. Mary’s school earlier this year and plans to include them in hopeful future donations. In addition, Sonic proudly sponsors GHS football and basketball radio and internet broadcasts.

Billings says these type of donations are not common for his franchise, but is grateful Sonic allows it to happen.

“It is not common. It’s very fortunate that we are able to do this and are very excited that we can do it,” Billings concluded with.
