STATE BOUND; Guthrie Softball wins Class 5A regional in Lawton

For the first time in nearly 20 seasons, Guthrie Softball is headed to the Class 5A State softball tournament. Guthrie picked up four runs in the first inning and held Lawton MacArthur in the seventh inning.

Karrah Dean carried Guthrie to a 5-4 victory over Lawton Mac on Thursday at Lawton with a strong game at the plate and in the circle.

With the win, Guthrie goes back to the state tournament for the first time since 1998. It also marks the seventh time the program qualifies for the big tournament.

Dean was hot from the plate by going 3-4 and scored one run. She singled in the first, second, and fourth innings.

Senior Madison Dutton finished 2-3 at the plate and fellow senior teammate Trista LeGrande got everything going in the first inning with a base hit.

Dean handled Lawton Mac’s lineup by racking up six strikeouts and allowing no earned runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings.

Guthrie (21-14) came out swinging, scoring four runs in the first inning to jump ahead of Lawton Mac early. Guthrie scored in the first on a hit by pitch, an error, a hit by Sydney Little and a groundout by Taylor Bolding.

Lawton Mac scored on an error in the fifth inning and an RBI single by Martin in the seventh inning. Lawton Mac managed a run in their last at bat and left the game tying run on the base to end the game.

The Lady Jays will next play Thursday at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. While a time has yet to be announced, Guthrie will play the winner of the Pryor Regional. Pryor needed one win on Thursday to punch their ticket back to the state tournament.

On Aug. 27, Pryor sneaked by Guthrie, 2-1, in Shawnee.

Chris Evans will provide the call of the game on Guthrie Radio (Guthrie Sports Page and Guthrie News Page).
