This past weekend, the Guthrie Golf & Country Club hosted the 53rd annual Howard Fife Invitational, a highly anticipated event that brought together skilled golfers from the region. The tournament, held on Oklahoma’s oldest golf course (established in 1900), showcased some impressive talent and thrilling moments over its two-day span.
The format of the Fife Invitational is unique, adding an extra layer of strategy to the competition. Day one saw teams competing by taking their low best ball score, while Sunday’s scoring was based on the team’s two low balls on the 9-hole regulation-length course. Each team was meticulously paired with handicaps verified by the GGCC and categorized by A, B, C, D, and E players to ensure fair play.

Among the 20 teams that participated, the winning team of Ernesto Peña, Randy Gates, Jeff Stevens, Linda Miller (Scorekeeper), Nick Chamberlain, and Tanner Underwood emerged victorious by shooting an impressive 8-under. Their consistent performance and teamwork set them apart from the competition, securing their place as champions of the 53rd Howard Fife Invitational.
The tournament was not without its share of memorable moments. One of the standout highlights occurred on Saturday morning when Garret Steggs executed a perfect hole-in-one on the 4th hole from 174 yards out (video below this article). The ball landed smoothly in the cup, held up by the flagstick, marking an unforgettable achievement for Steggs and adding to the excitement of the event.
Despite the sweltering conditions on Sunday, with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees and a heat index reaching 108, the players persevered, showcasing their dedication and passion for the sport.
The Howard Fife Invitational continues to be a celebrated tradition at the Guthrie Golf & Country Club, bringing together golfers of all skill levels for a weekend of camaraderie, competition, and remarkable golfing feats.
