It’s no secret, Guthrie has felt several of the strongest earthquakes over the last couple of years, but the quake that struck Monday morning grabbed everyone’s attention.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.4 earthquake struck between Guthrie and Langston at 10:57 a.m. The epicenter was centered near the intersection of County Road 74 and Post Road. It was about three miles deep.
The tremor could be felt throughout the state from Tulsa to Norman.
Several other quakes were felt shortly after, including a 3.4 rattler at 11:35 a.m. near the same epicenter.
The jolt of the first quake triggered several house alarms to go off. Residents said they had items fall off their wall and in some cases breaking.
Many shared the 4.4 was the strongest they had ever felt and believed the magnitude was going to be much higher. Business owners said they felt as if their roof was going to cave in while others thought maybe a vehicle had run into their building.
“I have never been scared during an earthquake before, but today was quite scary,” one business owner said.
School teachers and students were held breathless when the tremor rolled through their school building. One teacher tells Guthrie News Page her projector and other items in the classroom were knocked over sideways. The teacher went on to say her students erupted after they had realized as to what had just happened.
