Students returning back to the classroom; schedule pickup on Tuesday

Guthrie Public Schools is set to begin the brand new school year on Thursday. Before that, students will get the opportunity to get their class schedule and meet their teacher on Tuesday.

Elementary Meet the Teacher will be from 3 – 7 p.m. at all elementary school sites.

Meet the Teacher will also take place at the Junior High from 3 – 7 p.m.

For incoming freshmen at the High School, orientation will be from 6:30 – 8 p.m.

For high school students in grades 10 thru 12, class schedules will be available for viewing on the student portal beginning Tuesday. No schedule changes will occur on the first day of classes, but students may begin requesting schedule adjustments through the counselor’s office on Friday.

Teachers Back To School

The school district welcomed 36 new teachers as they went through orientation last week.

On Monday morning, the district held its annual convocation at the Junior High auditorium.

Students returning to the classroom

Due to COVID-19, the school district, along with others across the state, saw students leave for charter and private schools along with home schooling. The early numbers this year appears many are coming back to the classroom, according to Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson.

“As we continue enrollment, we are seeing a large number of enrollees across the district indicating they did not attend GPS last year but plan to do so in 2021-22.  Presumably, we are getting students back who we lost last year. Also, based on the input of our community, we increased the number of all-day Pre-K offerings dramatically.”

Noble Ave. Traffic

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has nearly completed the Division St. sidewalk project and have now started the sidewalk project on Noble Ave.

With a completion date around November, construction will potentially disrupt students walking to school as the project begins at Central Elementary and extends to Drexel St.

“ODOT staff have assured us the safety of our students will be their priority,” Simpson said. “They will be directing walking students along the best path to our schools based on the conditions at the time.”

The superintendent reminds parents that if your child typically walks along the affected route, please visit with them about following the instructions of the ODOT staff.
