Texting and driving results in manslaughter charge for Edmond woman

An Edmond woman reportedly admitted she was texting and driving when she collided with another vehicle resulting in the death of an Edmond man last September.

The accident occurred on Sept. 1, 2014 at the intersection of Broadway and Charter Oak resulting in the death of John Newsom, 50, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Newsom’s wife, who was the passenger, was rushed to a hospital and was admitted in stable condition. Related story: Three vehicle accident results in fatality; six people involved

The Logan County District Attorney’s Office filed a manslaughter charge in the first-degree on 33-year-old Theresa Sanchez on Oct. 9. The crime is punishable for not less than four years and not more than life and a fine of $10,000.

According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, Sanchez said she was texting on her phone at the time of the collision.

The report says that witnesses and evidence show Sanchez was eastbound on Charter Oak and failed to stop at a stop sign and impacted a Chevy pickup truck, who was southbound on Broadway. The collision caused the truck to collide with a maroon Honda driven by Newsom, who was traveling north on Broadway.

Furthermore, Sanchez tested positive for Tramadol following a blood test, but the trooper’s report says she had a valid prescription for the drug.

Sanchez pleaded not guilty to the charge on Oct. 13 and was given a $25,000 bond. She is scheduled to be back in court on Dec. 17 at 2 p.m.
