The Guthrie football program is enjoying their best run in school history and perhaps one game started it all.
The program won its first state championship in 2002 and five years later in 2007, but it may have been an October 2001 fall game that may have provided the spark that begun it all.
The BlueJays, under first year head coach Rafe Watkins, were in the midst of a 5-2 season with Carl Albert, at the time the four-time state champions, in town. The Titans had won five of the previous match-ups from 1992 to 2000 with an average score of 34-7.
Carl Albert built up a 22-13 lead in the fourth quarter, but Guthrie rallied and got a 30-yard field goal from Russell Rush, who drilled it down the middle, to give the Jays a 23-22 win. The BlueJays won the next two meetings and have won six of the last 10 meetings. Carl Albert leads the overall series 21-17.
“The win showed us (people in Guthrie) that we can play with the big boys,” Watkins said.
