The Pollard Theatre presents HAIRSPRAY

Guthrie, OK – The 1950s are out and change is in the air! The Pollard Theatre Company is proud to present the international smash hit musical comedy, HAIRSPRAY, a family-friendly musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs. Marking the fifth production of the company’s 29th Season, this larger-than-life 60s musical about love and acceptance dances its way into audience’s hearts April 15 – May 7, 2016.

It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do!

Hairspray features an extraordinarily talented cast including Timothy Stewart as Edna, Aaron Stewart as Link, Charlie Monnot as Corny Collins, Trinity Goodwin as Velma and DeVin Lewis as Motormouth Maybelle. University of Central Oklahoma students Phoebe Butts and Willie Hill make their Pollard Theatre debuts as Tracy Turnblad and Seaweed. Artistic Director W. Jerome Stevenson is directing this deliciously funny romp and has assembled a stellar production team which includes Todd S. Malicoate (Music Director), James A. Hughes (Scenic Design), Michael James (Costume Design), Timothy Stewart (Property Design) and Jared Blount (Sound Design).

“Hairspray is, in my opinion, a nearly perfect piece of musical comedy. It combines all of the best from John Waters campy film that is at once hilarious and profound with its message of acceptance and tolerance.” Says Director W. Jerome Stevenson. “Then, as if that wasn’t enough, it has one of the most amazing scores of the last 20 years by Mark Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Every song is just the right fit and beautifully completes the story-telling. Hairspray is the kind of fun, family musical that our audiences will be talking about for years.”

HAIRSPRAY  runs April 15th through May 7 at the Pollard Theater. Tickets are $30 with discounts for seniors, military, students and teachers. Performances are Fridays and  Saturdays at  8 p.m., Thursdays April 28, and May 5 at 8 p.m. and Sundays April 24th, and May 1st at 2:00 pm.
