Three of nine precincts voted against successful city sales tax

The City of Guthrie was successful in passing a city sales tax on Tuesday. Citizens voted for a three-quarter of a cent increase to benefit capital improvements. Of the nine precincts, three voted against the proposition.

The increase tax, with a 15-year sunset clause, passed 54.86 percent to 45.14 percent (531-437). It marks the first increase for the City since 1979. Related story: Voters say YES for City’s Capital Improvement Plan; Watts elected to stay on BOE

Three precincts arrived with more no votes while six came back with majority of yes votes. Two of the three failed precincts came from the southern edges of the city limits while the other came on the western side of town.

Voters at Precinct 102 (Harmony Community Church) casted 22 no votes to 12 yes votes.

In the southern portion of city limits, Precinct 105 (Lakeview Baptist Church) citizens casted 51 no votes and 38 yes votes while Precinct 205 (Bible Baptist Church) produced 73 no votes and 60 yes votes.

No votes were collected at Precinct 206 (Hispanic Baptist Church).

The largest precinct turnout came in the 307 Precinct (First Christian Church) with 280 voters, which 176 said yes.
