Thursday night football for Bluejays in OKC; Knights improved

Confidence is at an all-time high at Northwest Classen. Something that has not seen in five decades on the gridiron. Not only did they snap a long losing streak in week one, but have piled up more wins this year than the last two seasons combined.

93.7 FMGuthrie travels to Taft Stadium on Thursday evening for a district two matchup with Northwest. Kick is set for 7 p.m. with the pregame 30 minute prior. The game will be broadcasted on 93.7 FM, Guthrie Sports Page, Guthrie News Page and on the Guthrie News Page app.

The Jays enter 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the district and the Knights are 3-2 overall and 0-2 in district.

Northwest started the season 3-0 in the non-district with wins over Seeworth Academy, Centennial and Tulsa Hale. The victory over Seeworth snapped an 18-game losing streak that dated back to the early parts of the 2014 season.

The 3-0 start was the best start for the Knights since 1971. Yes, the teams are not power houses, but that’s really not that important.

Second-year head coach Edward King says a big part of the success has been due to offseason workouts, better IQ and in shape.

The Oklahoma City school has dropped their last two games in district play after being shut out by Piedmont (33-0) and last week against Woodward (47-14). Beginning with Guthrie, the Knights will play Carl Albert and McGuinness in consecutive weeks.

Northwest has adopted a spread offense to allow their skill players to make plays. On the defensive side they will attack with a 3-4 look.

Guthrie will attempt to put an end to a three-game losing streak and getting the offense going. The Jays have managed 14 points in their last three games while being outscored 82-14.

Despite the low scoring output in recent weeks, Guthrie will be favored in their next five games and are hopeful to get moving in the direction with confidence, which hopefully will come just in time for the playoffs.
