Titans are winning by offensive committee this season

The 2011 Carl Albert Titans do not have the offensive star power of a Tre Porter, a J.T. Realmuto or a David Oku of years past, but they continue to have an offense that is still producing wins.

The third ranked Titans (6-0, 3-0) will bring four players on offense that the Guthrie BlueJay defense will have to know where they are at all times inside Jelsma Stadium for the state’s game of the week on Friday evening with kick-off set for 7:30.

Carl Albert (6-0) will go for win number three in a row (2006 and 2009) when playing the Jays inside Jelsma Stadium. The last time a Guthrie team won on their home soil against the Titans was back in 2005 (33-14).

Class 5A’s top ranked Jays (6-0, 3-0) have won 30 of the last 33 games played inside Jelsma and will depend once again on their defense to keep the Titans off the board.

Carl Albert is led on the ground by senior running backs Darvonta Winston (5’5, 147) and Tyre Leblanc (5’8, 196). Winston will enter with 403 rushing yards while LeBlanc brings his 286 yards.

However, it does not stop there as the Titans will show a duo threat at quarterback with seniors Dillon Dansby (5’11, 160) and Taylor Hawkins (5’10, 184).

Dansby returns this season after sitting out last year with an injury. So far this season, Dansby, a dual threat QB, is completing 61% of his 66 passes to go with five touchdown passes and three interceptions. Meanwhile, Hawkins, who generally comes in on short down and goal line plays, has attempted six passes and does have a touchdown pass.

Dansby enters with 289 rushing yards while Hawkins, who did not play in last weeks win over Southeast with a shoulder injury, adds 228 yards on the ground this season.

The Titans will have to work their way against a Guthrie defense that ranks number one in rushing yards allowed, total yards allowed and fewest points allowed in Class 5A. Carl Albert will be biggest challenge running the ball with their multiple options.

The senior led Titan offense will bring an offensive line that measures out an average 6’1 and 257 pounds for a team averaging 246 rushing yards per game and 91 yards passing. The BlueJays will continue try to get into the back field with their front five in Richard Brothers, Connor Howard, Trevor Blassingame, Zach Brown and Vincent Norris. As a group, Guthrie allows just 35 yards on the ground.

GHS defensive coordinator Kelly Beeby will need solid play from his linebackers Landry Chappell and John Clark. Chappell leads 5A in tackles with 70 and Clark’s 53 tackles.

The Titans have two productive wide receivers in seniors Tank Richmond (6’1, 155) and Alex Polston (5’11, 168). However, Winston has the most receiving yards out of the back field with 196 yards and two scores. Polston leads the team with three receiving scores to go with 115 yards.

The winner of the week seven match up is likely to win the 5A-1 district title and perhaps secure two home playoff games.
