The Veterans Day National Committee of the Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes select Veterans Day observances throughout the country that represent fitting tributes to America’s heroes serve as models for other communities to follow in planning their own observances. The Town of Langston City has been designated a 2017 National Veterans Day Regional Site. Veterans and the public are invited to join the Town of Langston City in a salute to U.S. Veterans beginning Friday, November 10 thru Sunday, November 12. This is the fourth annual Veterans Appreciation Program hosted by Langston City, Langston University, the Langston Senior Citizens Nutrition Site, The Baptist Student Union, The New Hope Baptist Church and the Beta Phi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Each year the events have increased in attendance and memorabilia presentations. This year’s celebration will highlight the Wm Conrad Veterans Memorial Garden.
The Town of Langston City’s 2017 Veterans Day Appreciation Weekend will include the following events and activities:
Friday, November 10
9 a.m. – Town of Langston City staff, Veterans, family members, residents and students will place US flags on Veterans graves at Beulah Land Cemetery
10 a.m. — Baptist Student Union open for informal reception: coffee and fellowship
Noon — Langston University (LU) Student Veterans of America (SVA) will hold a Flagpole Ceremony at the Langston University Student Success Center.
12:30 p.m. – A Light Luncheon in Appreciation and Acknowledgements of Service to our Nation—A time for LU and local school students to meet, mix and mingle with our outstanding Veterans. The Second Annual Art Competition for Coyle School students will be judged at the Luncheon by veterans in attendance.

Saturday, November 11 — VETERANS DAY
10:00 – FLAG DEDICATION CEREMONY — The flags of our Nation, our State and each branch of the US Military will be officially raised at the Wm Conrad Veterans Memorial Garden by active duty military personnel representing each branch of the US Military and the Guthrie High School ROTC. The Program will also include patriotic songs by the Langston University Concert Ensemble and a balloon release. The Ceremony will be Live Streamed on allsportsproductionoklahoma.com.
Langston City’s youth and other youth attending this event will provide “Poppies for Everyone” in salute of the 99th Armistice Day. Armistice Day is commemorated every year on 11 November to mark the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning—the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.
The Wm Conrad Veterans Memorial Garden was initiated by Stewart and Mae Williams, local residents who dedicated their efforts to honouring lesser known local veterans who served our nation. Noon – “The Fred Gragg Luncheon with Our Veterans” — Veterans from Langston and surrounding towns including Coyle, Meridian, Guthrie, Stillwater, Perkins, Cushing; Langston University Student Veterans, Visiting Active Duty Military Personnel, Guthrie High School ROTC, their families, and our government representatives are invited to attend this Third Annual event at the Wesley Center at 777 Sammy Davis Jr. Drive Langston, OK 73050.
This event will continue the very successful and inspirational Breakfast (2015) and Luncheon (2016) events which were co-sponsored by US Veteran Fred Gragg of Bartlesville (in appreciation for his fellow veterans) and the Langston Senior Citizens’ Nutrition Program. There will be no charge for Veterans. Donations are requested from all other attendees. All donations will be given to the on-going development of the Wm Conrad Veterans Memorial Garden project.

Sunday, November 12
11 a.m. – Fourth Annual Veterans Appreciation Worship Service sponsored by New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to a sermon by Rev. David Hall, a US Veteran who resides in Langston City and who is the Pastor of the Rising Star Church, there will be performances by our Teens of Hope and the Christians in Action (CIA) dedicated to our veterans, patriotic songs, and recognition of the oldest, youngest, highest ranking and all female veterans in attendance.
1:30 – 3:00 p.m. An Appreciation Lunch and Fellowship will be co-sponsored by Beta Phi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc and New Hope Baptist Church which will include group photographs, ceremonial cake cutting, and continuing development of a local veterans’ roster/directory. A special media presentation will also be shown.
