Guthrie wrestling will be well represented in the Class 5A State Wrestling Championships on Saturday night, as two Bluejays have secured their spots in the state finals at Jim Norick Arena in Oklahoma City. Meanwhile, two other Guthrie wrestlers remain in contention for a place on the medal stand.
At 120 pounds, Kaedin Herendeen advanced to his third consecutive state championship match after a dominant 9-4 win over Bishop Kelley’s Conner Chancellor. Herendeen took control early, leading 3-1 after the first period and widening the gap with multiple takedowns in the second. Despite an aggressive third period, he held his lead to secure the victory. Now, Herendeen (36-6) will face Carl Albert’s Cash Wiley (45-3) in a battle of top seeds for the state title.
At 175 pounds, Bryson Hall kept his undefeated season intact, improving to 45-0 with a 10-3 semifinal win over Duncan’s Izaya Elix. Hall trailed early but responded with a series of takedowns to take control of the match. He will now face Grove’s Gavin Wyatt in the championship round, as Wyatt pulled off an upset in the opening round to reach the finals.
Guthrie’s Clayton Carey (165) ran into a tough challenge against top-seeded Deringer Hollenbeck of Grove, falling by a 15-0 technical fall. Carey now turns his focus to the consolation bracket, where he will face Lawton MacArthur’s Maliki Jefferson in a Saturday morning matchup. Both wrestlers are No. 3 seeds, with Carey entering at 26-13 and Jefferson at 31-12. A win would keep Carey in the hunt for a third-place finish.
At 138 pounds, Luke Lyons stayed alive in the tournament with an impressive 15-6 major decision over Collinsville’s Cruz Morrison in an elimination match. Lyons now faces Claremore’s Gunnar Murray, the No. 2 seed, with a chance to wrestle for third place in the evening session.
Meanwhile, Roston Uselton’s season came to an end in the consolation round after a first-period pin. Uselton closes out his year with a 32-16 record, capping off a strong campaign for the Bluejays.
With two Bluejays competing for state titles and two more battling for medals, Guthrie remains in the thick of the competition as the final day of the state tournament approaches.

Herendeen Chases Historic Third Title
Kaedin Herendeen, aiming to become Guthrie’s first-ever three-time state champion, dominated his opening match at 120 pounds. Clayton Carey, wrestling at 165 pounds, secured a spot in the state semifinals with a gritty 2-1 victory over Elgin’s George Tahdooahnippah. After a scoreless first period, Carey earned an escape point in the second. A key penalty against Tahdooahnippah for fleeing the mat added another point to Carey’s total, and he held on for the narrow win. He now prepares for a semifinal showdown against Grove’s top-seeded Derringer Hollenbeck.
