Upcoming important dates for high school and junior high football teams

August is here and the countdown to Guthrie Bluejay football is officially on, but before the season opener on Sept. 4 at Duncan there are plenty of important events and dates for both the high school and junior high teams.

On Aug. 7 the high school will checkout equipment and host their annual team meeting at the Building of Champions (located at the practice field). Senior players will pick up their practice packs ($45) at 8 a.m., juniors at 9 a.m., sophomores at 10 a.m. and freshmen at 11 a.m.

The mandatory team meeting is set for 6 p.m.

The junior high teams will checkout their equipment on Aug. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Junior High Building of Champions located at Faver.

The first official practice for the high school will be Aug. 10 with helmets and shorts only beginning at 7 a.m. The Jays will go full pads for the first time on Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. and highlighted by the annual Okie Drill at 5 p.m. All practices are open to the public.

The junior high teams will get their first chance on the practice field on Aug. 12 at 8 a.m.

Aug. 15 will be picture day for both the high school (7 a.m.) and junior high teams (8 a.m.) at Jelsma Stadium.

Meet the Bluejays will be later that evening at 6 p.m. inside Jelsma Stadium as the football, softball, cross country and cheer teams will be introduced, along with team announcements. The Guthrie Football Booster Club will feed the student-athletes at 5:30 p.m.

At the Meet the Jays, booster club dues can be purchased ($40 families, $25 individual) as well team apparel, including the official season t-shirts ($15).

On the first day of school (Aug. 20), the junior high football teams will travel to Stillwater for the first scrimmage of the season. Kick time is set for 6 p.m.

The following evening (Aug. 21), the high school will face-off with Bishop Kelley and Douglass in a three-way scrimmage at Langston University.

The varsity will travel the following week (Aug. 27) to El Reno for their final tune up with the Indians. The scrimmage is set to begin at 6 p.m.

The second and final scrimmage for the junior high will be a home contest with Kingfisher at the practice field (behind the high school) on Aug. 28 at 6 p.m.
