One person is dead following a high-speed chase that started in Oklahoma City and ended in the Cottonwood Creek near the intersection of Division St. and College Ave.
The pursuit began at around 8:30 on Thursday evening near southwest 15th Street and south Meridian Avenue on the railroad tracks in south Oklahoma City. As Oklahoma City police attempted to contact the driver he sped off.
With speeds over 100 miles per hour, the driver of the black four-door Dodge pickup truck, which was reported stolen, made his way from I-44 to I-35. As the driver made his way into Logan County, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and Guthrie Police Department took over the chase.
With reported speeds over 100 miles per hour on S. Division St., including in downtown Guthrie, the driver nearly collided with several motorists. Despite a Guthrie police officer clearing the intersections.
The driver, 31-year-old Stephen Sloniker, of Oklahoma City, continued north past the intersection of Division St. and College Ave. and as he approached the railroad tracks, north of College, he lost control of the vehicle, vaulted into the air, clipping trees and crashing into the Cottonwood Creek.
It’s estimated the vehicle traveled 75 yards once control was lost.
Sloniker was pronounced dead at the scene and taken by the Medical Examiner.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol dive team was called in to recover the body and assisted wreckers in removing the truck from the river.
