Video: Jays open up fall camp; season kicks off on Aug. 25

Football season is official under way for Oklahoma high schools, including the four-time state championship Guthrie football program. Camp started bright and early on Monday.

The Jays, along with some motivational music enjoyed by all, will be going through shorts and helmet only practices through Thursday before going full pads on Friday. Throughout the summer, the program went through their Summer Pride weightlifting and conditioning program.

The Bluejays are coming off a 6-5 season under fourth year head coach Kelly Beeby and will once again be challenged in District 5A-2 with the likes of Carl Albert and McGuinness.

The season begins with a road trip to Class 6A Enid on August 25 during Zero Week. The following week, Guthrie will entertain Shawnee for the home opener inside Jelsma Stadium. A year ago, the Jays took both games in victory.

The final non-district game will also be at home when 6A Ponca City comes to town.

Following a bye week, the Jays will go up against district favorites Carl Albert and McGuinness in back-to-back weeks.

Week six promises to be an enjoyable Homecoming with Northwest Classen on Oct. 6. Along with the gridiron battle, the program will honor the 10-year anniversary of the 2007 state championship team at halftime. In addition, the first ever state championship team, 2002, will also be honored as they will be inducted into the Guthrie High School Hall of Fame.

The Jays will finish the season with three long road games in four weeks. Week seven at Lawton Eisenhower, week nine in Woodward and week 10 in Guymon. Guthrie won all three matchups a season ago.

Piedmont rolls into Guthrie for a week eight contest and will look to avenge a disappointing 22-14 setback from a year ago.

After nine days of practices, Guthrie will scrimmage Bishop Kelley and Douglass at Langston University on Friday, Aug. 18.
