Video: Teachers rally in downtown for education funding

Local teachers took a weekend break from the State Capitol and took to the streets of downtown Guthrie for support in public education funding.

Guthrie Public Schools will be out of session on Monday marking the sixth day classes have not been held dating back to April 2 due to the statewide teacher walkout. Related article: Guthrie cancels school for the sixth day due to teacher walkout

State lawmakers have passed more than $400 million in new taxes, which has funded a $6,100 pay raise for teachers, purchasing textbooks and additional money into the classroom.

However, the Oklahoma Education Foundation says there is more to be done before teachers return back to the classrooms.

On Friday, OEA President Alicia Priest said an end to the capital gains tax deduction was necessary to end the walkout, along with a governor veto of a bill repealing a hotel/motel tax.
