City launches free summer swimming program with access to Pelican Bay, Trolley Service

The City of Guthrie has announced the return of its Summer Swimming Program. Beginning later this month, city residents will have free access to the Pelican Bay Aquatics Center in Edmond and complimentary trolley transportation.

Starting Friday, May 23, Guthrie residents can receive free wristbands for daily admission to the aquatic center by presenting proof of residency at the utility window on the second floor of City Hall. Each family is eligible for up to four wristbands per day, and children age three and under do not require a wristband.

The program is made possible through a partnership between the City of Guthrie and Pelican Bay to provide residents with safe, family-friendly summer recreation.

Beginning Friday, May 30, residents will also have the option to ride a trolley to Pelican Bay. The trolley, operated by First Capital Trolley, will depart from Highland Park at 11:30 a.m. and return from Edmond at 2:30 p.m., allowing for approximately two hours of swim time. Trolley riders must RSVP by noon the day before their intended trip by calling (405) 282-6000 or emailing melissa.trolley@yahoo.com.

The Mineral Wells splash pad has also opened as of May 23. However, the Banner Park splash pad remains closed due to a water main break affecting the west side of Guthrie. City officials say the closure is necessary to maintain water access for Mercy Hospital, nearby residences, and fire suppression systems. Crews are currently working to expedite repairs.

Several rules are in place to ensure safety during the program:

  • Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at Pelican Bay.
  • Patrons ages 13 to 15 must complete a T.A.S.P. (Teen Aquatic Safety Program) course before entering without supervision. More information can be found at pelicanbayaquatics.com/tasp.
  • Anyone under 18 riding the trolley without a parent must have a signed parental consent form.

Residents who prefer not to use the trolley can still receive wristbands for self-arranged visits to the aquatics center, with the same proof of residency requirements.

City officials are encouraging residents to take advantage of the free summer offerings and will continue to provide updates as the season progresses.
