Bluejays took the lead late in the game in a 9-8 victory over Bethel on the first day of the Mark Howard Memorial Tournament in Chandler. The Jays, who once trailed 7-2, took their one and only lead in the sixth inning with a Rigo Martinez triple that drove home three runs.
Martinez led Bluejays to victory by driving in five runs. He went 2-for-2 at the plate. He drove in runs on a double in the fourth, a walk in the fifth and a triple in the sixth.
Bethel captured the lead early and led 6-2 after two innings.
Austin Gellenbeck, in his first varsity showing on the mound, earned the win for the Bluejays. He went five innings, giving up two runs, four hits, striking out four and walking one.
Evan Kowalski started the game for Bluejays. He pitched two innings, surrendering six runs, four hits, striking out one and walking one.
Bluejays collected seven hits. Martinez and Jackson Waddell each collected multiple hits.
Guthrie will play the Class 2A defending state champion Christian Heritage at 3 p.m. on Friday. After sitting out a game, the Jays will play Putnam City West at 8 p.m. in Chandler.
