When many high school sports fans hear Collinsville High School, they immediately think of the wrestling program and their dominance, but the Cardinals’ football program is building momentum.
Collinsville is enjoying an unblemished 11-0 football season and will host Guthrie for the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. The game is set for 7 p.m. on Sallee Field.
The Cardinals, who are searching for their first ever football championship, defeated Ada, 41-7, on their home turf last week to advance, while the Bluejays defeated Duncan 23-20 in overtime.
Collinsville’s Junior Brayden Burd finished with 11 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown, an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, 12 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble in the win over Ada.
Now in his 12th season, Cards head coach Kevin Jones has rebounded nicely this year with his senior-loaded team following last season’s 5-5 campaign.
Much like the Bluejays, Collinsville prides themselves on defense. Senior linebacker Trent Brown, junior linebacker Peyton Russell and Burd are the leaders on the defense.
Collinsville, district champions of 5A-4, has made it look easy in 2018 by collecting four shutouts against Oologah (49-0), Ponca City (28-0), Claremore (31-0) and Tulsa Rogers (57-0).
On offense, the Cardinals have been able to run the football with lots of success with their two-back sets with Burd, Malcomn Tillman and Jake Tuttle but have proven they can throw the football with senior quarterback Cole Dugger.
The Cards have scored 31 or more points in nine of their 11 games.
On the national scene, Collinsville’s Grayson Boomer, a 6-5, 230-pound tight end, has committed to Oklahoma State University. At OSU, he is expected to play the role of “Cowboy back”, a tight end/fullback hybrid position.
Boomer had a dozen of college options, including Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Michigan and Nebraska.
The game can be viewed above and on Hot 93.7 FM beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the kickoff show.
Jays, Cardinals for the second time
Friday night’s match-up is the second meeting between the programs with the first meeting back in 2013.
In a state semifinal game, Guthrie’s L’liott Curry hauled in three touchdown catches in the second quarter to help prevail the Jays in a 45-13 win in Sapulpa.
In the following week, Guthrie won their fourth state title.
