Watch: Jesse Cepeda named GPS Student of the Month

Senior Jesse Cepeda was named Guthrie Public School’s February Student of the Month. He was nominated by his teacher Kara Sawyer for the character trait of patience.

“Jesse is a one of a kind student that many of us do not get the opportunity to meet in our our lifetime, let alone get to work with,” Sawyer said while describing Jesse in her recommendation letter.

Jesse attends Guthrie Upper Elementary School. Despite being in a wheelchair and does not use speech to communicate his wants and needs, but instead uses his eyes, facial expressions and his smile.

“You can see that Jesse has a greater challenge with movement since his muscles don’t always work the way they were intended to. He can see that his muscles work differently so he is always willing to find “work around” or another avenue to get things done,” Sawyer said.

Despite his challenges, Jesse remains patient.

“He is a young man that waits patiently on others around him to help meet most of his basic needs. He does not get angry, agitated or impatient. Never,” Sawyer said.

Jesse enjoys hanging out with his friends and video games.

Each month Guthrie Public Schools and Foundation Insurance team up to find the school district’s student of the month.

Although there are no specific grade requirements, the student must be in good-standing in the classroom to be eligible. Overall, the district says they are searching for students who go above and beyond in the way they treat their peers and teachers.

Blake Wimsey with Foundation Insurance congratulated Jesse and presented him with a $60 gift card to Walmart.
