Hope Watkins is fresh off her week-long trip to Washington, D.C. after winning the 2013 Rural Electric Cooperative “Youth Tour” contest, sponsored by OAEC Electric Cooperative in Oklahoma City.
Watkins, daughter of Jennifer Smith, began with the 50th Annual Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour on June 14, with a “Get Acquainted Banquet”. The 72 young winners, representing 25 of the state’s rural electric systems, departed for the nation’s Capital the next morning.
The group hosted a Congressional Summit for the Oklahoma Delegation, aides and guests, assisted by Congressman Lucas, Cole and Senator Inhofe and their staff.
The tour is coordinated each year by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives.
“The most exciting part of the trip was getting to speak with our states congressmen and hear first-hand their opinions on problems we endure,” the Guthrie High School senior-to-be Watkins said.
In addition to seeing all the historical monuments and taking photos of the White House, Watkins toured The U,S. Capitol, The U.S, Holocaust Museum, the Pentagon, Mount Vernon, Ford’s Theatre and enjoyed a riverboat cruise on the Potomac River.
“Getting to see the pages of our history books come to life and seeing places I had always dreamed of seeing,” Watkins said on some of the highlights she had on the trip.
