It was simply a night to forget for the Guthrie Bluejay football program after suffering a 9-0 shutout to Ponca City. The game was stopped late in the fourth quarter due to inclement weather.
For the second time in three weeks, weather played a role for the Bluejays, but this time forcing the game to come to an end with 5:05 left in the fourth quarter. Ponca City held a 9-0 lead and had possession of the football.
Guthrie was held to zero points for the first time since Oct. 2012 (McGuinness 32-0). In addition, Ponca City snaps a six-game losing skid in to the Jays dating back to 2010.
The game’s two scores came from Ponca City with a 30-yard pass from Brice McDougal to Trevor Howey in the second quarter. Mitch Wilson added a 33-yard field goal midway in the third quarter.
The Wildcats (1-2) simply were excited to collect any type of win after winning only 10 games in the previous five years.
Guthrie (2-1) could not get any offensive rhythm in either half. The Jays running game finished with 21 rushing yards on 23 attempts and 11 receptions for 101 yards.
The Jays had eight punts and three turnovers to go with just six first downs.
The Ponca offense was not stellar as the Guthrie defense held the ‘Cats to 214 yards of offense, including only 37 rushing yards on 25 tries.
Ponca finished with seven penalties and seven punts.
Guthrie will take an advantage of a bye week before traveling to Carl Albert on Sept. 23 to open up district play.
