A Guthrie woman was arrested for swapping out price tags on merchandise and paying the lower prices. Once in custody, an officer found the woman paid for her discounted items using a government assistance debit card belonging to a deceased person.
Guthrie police was dispatched to Wal-Mart after 10 p.m. on Jan. 15 for a female shoplifter. The officer was informed the woman paid for 16 items with seven items on a Oklahoma EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) card and the other nine items with cash.
A store surveillance employee says he saw the woman enter the store, walked toward the clearance section, began to remove sticker prices and placed them on non-clearance, higher priced items. Afterwards, she used the self check-out line and scanned the removed discounted sticker prices. According to court papers, the woman paid $3.24 in cash for the nine items that had a retailed value at $184.49.
Julie Ann Taylor, 40, was placed in custody for petit larceny and transported to the city jail.
During the booking process, an alert police officer notice the EBT card belonged to a female who died in October. The officer says the $57.16 receipt used to purchase the items matched the government card found in Taylor’s coat pocket.
The officer continued his search and found four pills, which Taylor did not have a prescription for. Taylor told the officer, “thought they were Tylenol.”
On Wednesday, Taylor was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance (Tramadol), obtaining property by trick or deception value less than $500.00 and possession of food stamps issued to another person. She was given a $5,000 bond.
Last August, Taylor was charged with child neglect and harboring a fugitive.
