The Guthrie YMCA is opening a safe, fun space for ages eight and older to come after school and during the summer. The YMCA staff says kids will enjoy foosball, air hockey, interactive gaming, board games and many other fun activities.
The second floor of the building, located at 114 E. Oklahoma Ave., will house a second group exercise studio to offer a larger variety of classes.
A social area will house couches, chairs and game tables to give seniors a space to relax, connect and build relationships while enjoying their coffee.
“A youth space has been designed for 8-15 year olds to come after school and during the summer to give them activities to participate in, in a structured environment,” Center Director Kristen Hersom said. “Activities for this space include air hockey and foosball tables along with a Wii gaming system and table to do homework or play board games.”
A community room, which is available for rent, has plenty of space for various options, including meetings and potentially a birthday party rental option on weekends.
Hersom said a computer lab will be utilized for kids to work on homework after school and also gives the staff the opportunity to explore a STEM program.
“We very excited to be opening a safe and fun place for our community to enjoy,” Hersom said.
The total investment in the renovation and furnishings of the space is approximately $90,000.
“With the help of our committed volunteers we were able to secure $25,000 for this capital campaign,” Hersom said. “We are very grateful for the individuals and businesses who gave $11,200 of that and to the City of Guthrie for their generous donation of $13,800.”
In conclusion, Hersom stated, “All of them saw the importance of our vision to have a safe and fun place for the youth to enjoy.”
The Youth Center will be open Monday through Thursday from 3:15 to 8 p.m., Friday 3:15 – 7 p.m., Saturday 9 – 12 p.m. and Sunday 2 – 4 p.m.
Membership prices begin at $9.75 a month.
