The Guthrie-Edmond Regional Airport has been busy this past year with events and now development is taking over to allow the airport continued growth.
The Guthrie-Edmond Regional Airport (GeoPort) is home to more than 100 aircraft, and handles more than an estimated 30,000 operations per year. These operations include aircraft testing and inspection, corporate flights, flight instruction, and pleasure flying. In 2005, the City of Guthrie entered into an inter-governmental agreement with the City of Edmond to co-sponsor the airport.
Through the help of Federal and State funding, the airport is developing the North West Development Area which was purchased in 2010. This year, the project will complete Phase One of the development, which will provide the taxilanes to two T-hangars, holding eight aircraft each. Additionally, a ten unit T -hangar is currently being constructed to house ten aircraft in an existing site.
With the completion of the two potential hangar sites in the North West Development Area, and the hangar that is currently under construction, the airport will grow by 22 percent and be able to house 140 aircraft.
With the continued growth at the airport an aviation association has recently been created. Known as the Guthrie-Edmond Aviation Association (GEAA), the group will be working on public events, aviation awareness, community involvement and bringing local pilots and aviation enthusiasts together. You can check them out at www.GuthrieEdmondAviation.org.
The airport, which consisted originally of a grass strip, was built in 1941 and in 1968 a a 3,000-foot section of paved runway was constructed. From 1975-1995, the present-day ramp was constructed in sections and by 1998 the paved runway had grown in length to 4,100 feet. In 2002, the airport terminal building was built.
