Laura Austin Thomas, Assistant District Attorney, with 30 years prosecution experience announces her campaign for election as District Attorney for Payne and Logan Counties.

Laura Austin ThomasThe past 27 years, Thomas has worked in Payne and Logan Counties in multiple areas ranging from misdemeanors and felony offenses, juvenile delinquent and deprived, capital homicide to administering and managing two of the top performing child support offices in the State.

Thomas believes an aggressive juvenile division is our first line of influence and defense in the lives of children in crisis.  She believes the successful collection of child support can remove children and families from poverty and government assistance.  In 2013, Thomas was chosen Attorney of the Year by the Oklahoma Child Support Enforcement Association.

“Looking out for our communities and public safety is most important to me,” said Thomas.  “I’ve lived and worked in both Payne and Logan Counties, and it’s been an honor to serve our people these past 27 years.”

Monday, she appeared before the Pardon and Parole Board to argue against the recommended release of convicted murderer, Christine Biegler (Payne Co. 1994).

“I’m appalled parole would be recommended to the Board for this defendant who brutally slaughtered a 52 year old disabled woman by stabbing her in excess of 30 times and slitting her throat from ear to ear resulting in an agonizing death.  A jury recommended a life sentence in 1994, and the defendant has had numerous misconduct violations while incarcerated.”

“Upon election, I will heighten focus and resources in areas that will protect our citizens, especially the vulnerable including domestic abuse, abuse and neglect of children and abuse of the elderly.  I also strongly believe people should be held accountable and responsible for the consequences of their actions.  I want to increase prosecution of those who willfully fail to pay child support, those who commit welfare and food stamp fraud and the career criminal.”

Laura Thomas has created a website for her campaign and to provide further information to the public at www.lauraaustinthomas.org.

In December, current District Attorney Tom Lee announced  he was not going to seek re-election and has plans of retirement.

Lee was appointed, by Gov. Mary Fallin, to the position in 2011 as the successor to District Attorney Rob Hudson, who resigned to join the attorney general’s office as first assistant. Hudson now is a special judge in Logan County.
