The final game of the year came down to one inning on defense and seven innings of offense for the Guthrie BlueJays.
In an elimination state tournament game in Claremore, Carl Albert scored all six of their runs in the third inning en route to a 6-3 win. The big blow in the inning came from the bat of Taylor Hawkins, who cleared the bases with a grand slam.
Guthrie added a run in the third and two more in the sixth, but had plenty of other opportunities as they left a total of 12 men on base. The Jays out hit the Titans (9-8) and committed fewer errors (4-3), but simply could not manufacture the runs.
Carl Albert turned around and played Shawnee and was eliminated by a final score of 10-5. Shawnee now must beat Bishop Kelley twice to advance to Saturday’s state championship game.
The Jays got two hits each from Bryan Dutton, Landry Chappell, and Donovan Jordan. Dutton provided his second home run of the state tournament with a 2-run shot and finishes the season with 12 round trippers and 54 RBIs.
Freshmen hurler Reed Roberts was left with the loss, but finishes the season with the most wins on the BlueJay pitching squad with eight.
Guthrie finishes the season with a 27-13 record and a state tournament appearance for the first time since 2005. The Jays lose one senior in Hunter Gates and will be a favorite to return back to the post season tournament next season.
