Baseball takes down No. 2 Chickasha on the road

The Guthrie BlueJay baseball team wants to be a state tournament team come mid May and with Monday nights performance they show they can be one of those eight teams.

Guthrie traveled to Class 5A’s 2nd ranked team, in Chickasha, and pulled out a 5-4 win for their third win in a row and improve to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the Suburban Conference.

Chickasha, who has made the last five state tournament’s, falls to 12-3 on the season and their 3-game win streak snapped.

The lone senior on the Guthrie roster, Hunter Gates, pitched five and two-thirds of an inning and came away with his second win of their year (2-0). Gates was solid for the first five innings, but found some trouble in the sixth inning when the Chicks pulled the scored within one, 5-4, with a 3-run homer.

Younger brother Kasey Gates relieved the older Gates, but was unable to record an out in two batters and forced the Jays to go to freshman shortstop Jacob Chappell for just the second time this season. Chappell delivered by recording the last four outs to collect his first save of the year and just the team’s second.

The Jays got on the score board first in the second inning when Luke Davis and Dusty Cotton started things with singles and were moved up to second and third when freshmen outfielder Donovan Jordan put down the sacrifice bunt. Davis eventually came home on a Chickasha error. Chappell followed that with a single, but Cotton was called out at the plate to conclude the inning.

Chickasha tied the game in the home half of the second, and the scored remained dead lock until the fifth when Guthrie scratched two more runs with Chickasha miscues’.

Bryan Dutton started the inning with a walk, Scott Pickle put down a bunt, but an error allowed Dutton to go to third and Pickle to second. Chickasha then allowed back-to-back walks to Hayden Seifert and Landry Chappell to plate Dutton. The second run came across off the bat of Davis who grounded out, but scored Pickle to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Guthrie struck again in the sixth with two more runs, but this time manufactured their own runs with hits by Reihs and Pickle. However, Chickasha pitching walked Seifert to bring in Reihs and then Landry Chappell grounded into a fielder choice’s that brought Dutton home.

Guthrie will be back in action when they host Noble, on Tuesday afternoon, at Squires Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00.
