Both Guthrie basketball programs had the ultimate goal of winning the Duncan Holiday Tournament this past week. While the goal fell a game short, both teams reached their second goal of winning two out of three games.
After a dominating 45-18 first round win over Southeast, the Guthrie Lady Jays were in a back-and-forth game with Class 6A Edmond North.
The Lady Huskies are led by second-year head coach Pete Papahronis, who previously coached for both the boys and girls at Guthrie High School. To add more to the game, Guthrie head coach Jack Hankins’ freshmen niece plays for the Huskies.
Edmond outscored Guthrie 16-10 in the final quarter for a 54-48 win. Edmond went on to defeat Elgin in the championship game.
Senior Micayla Haynes finished with 14 points with all those coming in the first half. Freshmen guard Nakiya Stevenson finished with 13 points.
In the third place game against Wichita Falls Hirshi, the Lady Jays jumped to a large first half lead and finished with a 61-44 third place win.
Guthrie is now 5-1 and currently ranked fifth in Class 5A. Related story: Guthrie sweeps first round of Duncan Holiday Tournament

Centennial jumped out to a 21-9 first quarter lead with 10 different Bison playing in the first eight minutes. However, Guthrie responded in the second quarter and outscored the Bison 15-7 to trail 28-24 at the half.
In a back-and-forth second half, Guthrie took the final shot in regulation to win it, but fell short to go into the overtime period. In overtime, the Bison outscored the Jays 6-5. Again, Guthrie had the final shot to win it, but, again, the shot fell short.
Senior JD Honeycutt finished with 10 points and just behind him was junior guards David Sumo and TC Ellis with 9 points each.
In the third place game against Duncan, either team was able to shoot the ball well.
The Bluejays are now 4-2 heading into January.
