Bicyclist struck, killed by vehicle

A bicyclist was struck and killed Saturday afternoon north of Guthrie.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 1:41 p.m. to US-77 approximately half-mile south of County Road 73 north of Guthrie for a bicycle versus vehicle accident.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, 52-year-old Richard Safi was operating a bicycle when he was struck from behind by a 2013 GMC Sierra driven by 85-year-old Vivian Lewis of Mulhall.

The collision report stated both were traveling northbound on the highway and the GMC failed to observe the bicyclist and hit the man from behind.

Safi was transported by a medical helicopter from the scene, transported to OU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Assisting OHP with the scene was the Guthrie Fire Department and Logan County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of collision is listed as “pending investigation.”
