Bill would expand Oklahoma’s Tax-Free Weekend to include school supplies and athletic gear

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma families could see more savings during the annual back-to-school rush if a new bill from Sen. Kristen Thompson, R-Edmond, becomes law.

On Monday, Thompson filed Senate Bill 231, which seeks to expand Oklahoma’s tax-free weekend in August to include common school supplies and athletic equipment. Currently, the tax holiday exempts only clothing and shoes under $100 from state and local sales taxes.

The proposed legislation would make items like backpacks, binders, pens, pencils, markers, and notebooks tax-exempt during the state’s first weekend in August. Recreational and athletic gear, including cleats, gloves, mouthguards, shoulder pads, and goggles, would also be eligible for the tax break.

“Expanding the items discounted during Oklahoma’s tax-free weekend is a common-sense way to give families additional tax relief while simultaneously boosting business at local retailers,” Thompson said. “Back-to-school shopping can add up, and many Oklahomans don’t realize that these classroom essentials aren’t already exempt from sales taxes during this key shopping weekend. This simple change will ease the financial burden on parents and ensure every child has the tools they need to excel in the classroom and on the field.”

The bill will be considered when the legislative session begins in February 2025.
