Blassingame, Callins highlight All-District team; 16 Jays recognized

In an undefeated championship season, the Guthrie football program will be heavily recognized with post season honors. The first of those honors recognizes 16 players listed on the All-District teams selected by the coaches.

Senior running back Kai Callins was named Co-Player of the Year, along with Carl Albert’s Stevie Thompson, for the top-heavy district 5A-2. Teams in the district include Guthrie, Carl Albert, McGuinness, Deer Creek, Guymon, Western Heights, Northwest Classen and El Reno.

The team is represented by seniors only.

Callins capped off a stellar BlueJay career with 1,736 yards rushing and 31 rushing scores in his senior campaign, including four in the Class 5A state championship. He added 203 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions while adding a passing score.

Jays senior defensive tackle Trevor Blassingame was named as the Defensive Player of the Year. The four-year starter anchored a defense that held teams to less than 40 yards a game.

Blassingame continued to progress in the amount of tackles throughout his career and finished with 125 tackles. He finishes his four-year career with 362 stops. Equally impressive was his 15 sacks in the championship season and finishes with 29 for his career.

Guthrie senior kicker, Luis Morales, and Deer Creek’s Dillion Noble were named as Special Teams Players of the Year.

Morales drilled 10-of-14 field goals, including a school record 51-yarder in the state semifinals and finished 14-of-21 in his three years kicking for the BlueJays. In addition, Morales only missed two extra points all season.

Earning first team offensive honors are quarterback Reed Roberts, wide receiver Donovan Jordan, offensive lineman Blake Finley.

Roberts was phenomenal all season, but especially in the playoffs. Roberts completed 71 percent of his passes that went for nearly 1,500 yards. Perhaps just as impressive, he completed 100-of-141 passes with 17 of those going for scores.

Jordan, who was hampered with an ankle injury in the playoffs, finished with 602 yards on 41 catches. He finished with four touchdown grabs and 21 in his career.

Finley made the move to offensive line a season ago and it paid off for the Jays offense in 2013. He helped anchor the group that allowed the Guthrie running attack to average 273 yards on the ground and 106 more through the air.

Fellow offensive lineman Baylor Wilhelm and Dakota Coonfield also were honored with second team all-district.

The dominant defense landed three members on the first team all-district defensive team and one on the second team.

Conner Howard and Blaze Hastings highlight the defensive line, that saw the duo often in the offensive backfield with their ability to get off the ball and past their defender.

Howard, the team’s vocal leader, finished with 89 tackles and proved to be valuable for his team by the ability to play multiple positions.

Hastings, who at once did not think he would be able to play this season due to injury, simply gave the defense an added spark with his ability to pass the rusher and make defensive plays. He finished with a second best 9 sacks to go with 66 tackles.

Zonte’ Veasley seemed to play his biggest games on the biggest stages, including the 2011 and 2013 state championship games. Veasley, a three-year starter, was valuable as he was able to slip away from his corner position and play safety when needed. He proved to be big on special teams and it was his kick return that allowed the hail mary just before the half against McAlester possible.

Payton Haynes, a second team selection, had a career high 55 tackles in 2013 after collecting 34 a season ago. Haynes was able to stop the run up the middle that forced running backs to the outside and often causing for a loss on the play.

Four team members were named to the Honorable Mention team: Levi Garrett (defensive line), Brent Berryhill (defensive line), Cory Douglass (offensive line) and Jameson Benson (specialist).

Benson proved to be valuable for the special teams as the team’s snapper. With several PAT’s and punts, Benson was able to be true on each and one of his snaps.
