With the final full week left of the high school baseball season, that will determine regionals and regional sites, the Guthrie Baseball program perhaps took a full step forward.

Entering Tuesday’s match up between sixth ranked Guthrie and seventh ranked Shawnee, it was all but guaranteed that three of the four Class 5A regional sites are etched in stone from the West with Deer Creek, Chickasha, and Carl Albert.

The BlueJays took a step closer to hosting a regional by posting a 14-0 shut out win, in Shawnee, with a 5-inning run rule game. Guthrie improves to 17-7 overall and 9-3 in conference play while Shawnee drops their second straight game and is 13-8 overall and 6-4 in the conference.

The final coaches poll, that determines regional pairings and sites, closes on April 18th and will be released on April 19th. Teams playing to host the final regional spot are Guthrie, Shawnee, Durant, and McGuinness.

The Jays scored five runs in the second, four in the third, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth to secure the 17th win of the year.

Landry Chappell was 3-for-3 with a RBI while Jacob Chappell and John Clark lead the team with two RBIs each. Bryan Dutton and Hayden Seifert each added a hit as the Jays took advantage of six Shawnee errors.

Shawnee allowed three base-on-balls and committed two errors in the second inning en route to Guthrie scoring their five runs. In the third inning, Guthrie piled on two hits and took advantage of two walks, and one error that lead to two runs to score to make it a 9-0 game after three innings of play.

In the fourth inning, the Jays added three hits (Hayden Seifert, Landry Chappell, and Jacob Chappell) to go with two more Shawnee errors to put the game out of reach with a 13-0 lead. In the final inning, Scott Pickle and Seifert both walked and later Pickle scored on a sac fly by Landry Chappell.

Dutton went the distance to collect the win on the mound and improves to 4-2 on the season. The sophomore held the Wolves to just two hits while collecting five strike outs.

Up next on the schedule for the Jays will be Classen coming to Squires Field, on Thursday, and finishing the week with a Friday game on the road at Del City.
