The Guthrie boys’ basketball team rallied from an early double-digit deficit to take down Class 5A’s 4th ranked El Reno Indians on Friday night. The Lady Jays remained unbeaten in a top 10 showdown with the Lady Indians.
The Bluejays got a game high 23 points from junior guard David Sumo and overcame an 11-point first quarter deficit to win 68-60. Meanwhile, the seventh ranked Lady Jays had to hold off a late rally from sixth ranked El Reno for a 56-51 win.
In the two games combined, Guthrie outscored El Reno 26-1 to build halftime leads.
Sumo scored 12 in the second half while senior JD Honeycutt poured in a career high 21 points on nine made shots from the field.
The Jays opened the game up in the second quarter by outscoring El Reno (5-2) 15-0. The Indians were held to their lowest scoring output on the season and entered the game averaging 79 points per game.
Guthrie (2-1) benefitted from the charity line by making 9-of-13 in the second half, including 9-11 in the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, the Lady Jays (3-0) forced several turnovers resulting in a 25-14 intermission lead.
Senior guard Micayla Haynes led the charge, especially in the first eight minutes.
Haynes scored 14 of her team high 27 points in the first quarter with five made shots and three free throws. Now with three games in the books, Haynes is averaging 24.3 points per game.
With a 1-point advantage at the end of the quarter (14-13), Guthrie held El Reno (2-2) to just a point in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Indians 11-1 for the 25-14 halftime lead.
Freshmen guard Nakiya Stevenson added 10 points, including seven in the second half.
Both teams will participate in the Duncan Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28 – 30.
The Lady Jays are seeded as the No. 2 team and will play Southeast at 4 p.m. and the Jays, as the 5th seed, will play right after at 5:30 p.m. against Harding Charter.
