The Piedmont Wildcats have playoffs on their mind heading into week eight of the season. A win on Thursday night guarantees a week 11 game for the Wildcats. Something that has not happened since 2011.
Without a win, the Wildcats are still likely to make the playoffs. Currently, Piedmont sits at 5-2 overall and 4-0 in district play, but enter the toughest portion of their schedule with the Bluejays, Carl Albert and McGuinness to finish out the season.
Guthrie and Piedmont kickoff the Fall Break game on Thursday evening with a 7 p.m. kick in Piedmont. The game can be heard on 93.7 FM, Guthrie Sports Page and Guthrie News Page beginning at 6:30.
The Bluejays, who play their final regular season away game, enter 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the district with consecutive wins over Northwest and Lawton Ike.
The Wildcats have won four straight games, which have all been districts wins over Northwest, Lawton Ike, Guymon and Woodward. In non-district action, they finished 1-2 with a season opening win over El Reno and back-to-back losses to Weatherford and Noble.
In district play, the Wildcat defense has allowed only 38 points while scoring 145.
The Wildcats are seeing their most productive season since joining Class 5A in 2014. After consecutive 3-7 seasons, Piedmont is looking for their first winning season since 2011 (6-5).
“We have high expectations for this season,” Wildcats head coach Drew Gossen said before the season.
Gossen has depended on the running game to meet those goals, especially senior Landon White to meet those high expectations. Entering week eight, White has piled up over 1,100 yards and 19 scores after collecting 431 yards in 2015.
Senior Noah Ellis returns as the Wildcat quarterback. A year ago, he completed 102 passes for over 1,000 yards. Last week in the win over Woodward, he finished 7 of 14 passing for 65 yards and a touchdown toss.
With three games left in the regular season, the Bluejays are looking to extend two streaks. A 16-year winning season record and 11 consecutive playoff trips.
The Jays are 6-0 all-time against Piedmont.
A win helps all three streaks to keep the Jays on par.
