The interim title on Guthrie High School baseball coach Casey Porter was removed following Monday evening’s Board of Education meeting and officially takes over as the Jays head coach.
Porter, who in May completed his 19th year in the Guthrie school district, was named the interim coach in December 2014 when Jon Chappell accepted the school’s athletic director position.
This past season the Bluejays finished 19-13 and was crowned 5A-1 district champions. The Jays hosted regionals, but fell two games short of the state tournament.
Guthrie is expected to be back in the thick of things in 2016 with several starters returning, including seniors Rowdy Reihs, Zane Maltz, Braden Davenport and Camden Wilcott.
“Guthrie has a long-standing baseball tradition of excellence,” Supt. Dr. Mike Simpson said. “We are excited about the leadership Coach Porter provided last year and look forward to his future work with our student-athletes.”
In 2014, Porter was named the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association’s Assistant Coach of the Year.
In addition to his teaching and coaching responsibilities, Porter is set to begin his 14th year covering GHS athletics as a broadcaster for the Guthrie football and basketball programs.
