Jon Chappell has been inducted into a Hall of Fame before in his hometown, but the Guthrie High School baseball coach will be honored on the state level.
Chappell will be inducted into the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 26 in Oklahoma City.
Last April, the GHS Hall of Fame coach won his 500th game. A year ago, Chappell was awarded the Ferguson Jenkins Awards and was honored at the Jim Thorpe Museum.
Chappell, who is set to begin his 22nd year at Guthrie where he teaches at the Junior High, has averaged 20-plus wins a year at his alma mater.
The friendly, happy going coach graduated from Guthrie High in 1982 after lettering in football, wrestling and baseball and the following year went to the University of Oklahoma to play baseball. Chappell later went on to play at Oklahoma Baptist University, in Shawnee, to finish his career.
Before becoming Guthrie’s head baseball coach, Chappell served as an assistant coach at Central State, which is now Central Oklahoma.
Chappell is married to Sharla Chappell and they have three children (Britney, Justin and Landry) and one grandchild (Braylen).
